## Description

Roughly 113,000 tonnes of air cargo passed through Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX/ZJSY) in 2025, up about 16% year on year. The Hainan island airport also recorded some 21.85 million passengers that year, an all-time high that widens belly-hold capacity on domestic routes. Growth is driven largely by the Hainan Free Trade Port regime, whose customs and tax concessions make Sanya attractive for consumer goods, duty-free merchandise and perishables. In 2025 the airport launched its first scheduled international freighter route to Europe under fifth-freedom rights, moving it beyond a purely domestic feeder role. Alternatives are Haikou Meilan (HAK) for the north of the island and Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) or Shenzhen Bao'an (SZX) on the mainland for intercontinental freighter capacity. Clearance runs through China Customs; simplified procedures apply to certain goods under the Free Trade Port framework and should be confirmed with the handling agent beforehand.
