## Description

Among Europe's airports, Santiago's is one of the very few named after a woman: since 2020 the field has carried the name of poet Rosalía de Castro. Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport (IATA: SCQ, ICAO: LEST) is also Galicia's only airport with a freight business worth the name — close to 5,000 tonnes moved through its cargo terminal in a record 2024, easing to roughly 3,700 tonnes in 2025. Express and mail shipments dominate, alongside textiles from the Galician apparel cluster around Inditex; fish and seafood travel as belly load, and customs clearance operates on site. Passengers set a record too: roughly 3.6 million in 2024, anchored by a Ryanair base plus Iberia and Vueling mainland routes, with Aena as operator. The airport stands at Lavacolla, ten kilometres east of the city — the name recalls the stream where pilgrims on the Way of St James washed before entering the holy city. Forwarders use the A-54 motorway to reach the cargo area; the AP-9 connects the ports and industrial centres of A Coruña and Vigo in about an hour.
