Roughly 100,000 tonnes of air cargo move through Salt Lake City (IATA: SLC, ICAO: KSLC) each year, carried partly in the bellies of Delta's long-haul flights to Amsterdam, London and Paris and partly by FedEx and UPS, both of which run dedicated facilities on the field. Delta — SLC's dominant carrier, with around 255 peak-day departures to nearly 100 destinations — is investing 18 million dollars in a new 48,000-square-foot cargo terminal with cold-chain capability, due to open in 2027. Perishables, pharmaceuticals and e-commerce dominate the mix. Ground connectivity is the airport's real edge: Interstates 15 and 80 cross beside the field, Union Pacific runs its mainline along the southern boundary and operates intermodal terminals alongside BNSF, and the Utah Inland Port Authority is assembling one of the country's most comprehensive inland-port networks in the Northwest Quadrant. Foreign-Trade Zone 30 extends benefits across a 60-mile radius. When the rebuilt 'New SLC' opened in 2020, it was the first wholly new large hub airport built in the United States this century. For intercontinental widebody freighters, Los Angeles (IATA: LAX) remains the nearest heavyweight.
