## Description

Silver ornaments were the first cargo to leave Rajkot International Airport (IATA: HSR, ICAO: VAHS): a 600 kg consignment in August 2025 opened domestic freight operations at Gujarat's newest greenfield airport, and throughput reached 1,121.8 tonnes in the April 2025 to March 2026 financial year, up 84.4 percent. Opened in July 2023 near Hirasar, about 30 km north-east of Rajkot on National Highway 27 towards Ahmedabad, the airport replaced the cramped old city airfield. Air India launched outbound cargo first, with IndiGo following shortly after; both carry belly cargo on domestic trunk routes to Delhi, Mumbai and other metros, with typical shipments of 100 kg to one tonne. Compared with trucking to Ahmedabad, transit times fall by up to two days depending on destination. Demand comes from Rajkot's jewellery trade — an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 wholesalers dispatch silver, gold and imitation jewellery across India — plus engineering castings and machine parts from the Saurashtra industrial belt. A dedicated cargo terminal is under construction on a site of more than 1,000 hectares that also leaves master-plan room for a second runway; until it opens, shipments clear through the former passenger terminal. There is no international freight handling yet, so export consignments route via Ahmedabad (AMD) or Mumbai (BOM). For forwarders, HSR is best treated as a fast domestic feeder point rather than a full cargo station.
