## Description

Silver ornaments were the first cargo to leave Rajkot International Airport (IATA: HSR, ICAO: VAHS): a 600 kg consignment in August 2025 marked the start of domestic freight operations at Gujarat's newest greenfield airport. Opened in July 2023 near Hirasar, about 30 km north-east of Rajkot on National Highway 27 towards Ahmedabad, the airport replaced the cramped old city airfield. Air India and IndiGo carry belly cargo on domestic trunk routes to Delhi, Mumbai and other metros, with typical shipments ranging from 100 kg to one tonne. Demand is driven by Rajkot's jewellery trade — an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 wholesalers dispatch silver, gold and imitation jewellery across India — plus engineering castings and machine parts from the Saurashtra industrial belt. A dedicated cargo terminal is under construction; until it opens, shipments are processed through the former passenger terminal. There is no international freight handling yet, so export consignments are routed via Ahmedabad (AMD) or Mumbai (BOM). For forwarders, HSR is best treated as a fast domestic feeder point rather than a full cargo station.
