## Description

Pharmaceuticals account for roughly 72 percent of exports through Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD), and in the 2025/26 financial year the Hyderabad airport moved a record of about 187,000 tonnes of cargo in total. The calendar-2024 figure was 180,914 tonnes, of which 108,520 tonnes was international freight. GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd runs the site as a public-private venture at Shamshabad, some 24 km south of the city, on the Outer Ring Road and National Highway 44. Two cargo terminals form the core of the freight operation: the original 14,330 m² facility rated at 150,000 tonnes a year, and Cargo Terminal 2, commissioned in May 2026, which adds 16,864 m² and an initial 50,000 tonnes of capacity, expandable to 100,000 tonnes. The new terminal's centrepiece is a fully temperature-controlled pharma zone built for pharmaceutical and perishable cargo. Qatar Airways Cargo raised its Doha freighter service from two to three weekly B777F rotations in February 2025. Demand is anchored by the Genome Valley life-sciences cluster and the surrounding manufacturing belt, so vaccines, biologics and generics dominate the export mix. For very large or outsize consignments, Chennai (MAA) and Mumbai (BOM) remain the practical alternatives within trucking range.
