## Description

No other US Air Force site in Europe is larger: RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk hosts the 48th Fighter Wing, operating F-15E Strike Eagles and, since 2021, as the first US unit in Europe, the F-35A Lightning II. Despite its name, the base is entirely American-operated; thousands of US service members live in the region. Civilian flight or freight operations are excluded. Air cargo from Suffolk is routed via London Stansted (STN, approx. 60 km), one of Britain's most important freight airports.
