Fresh fruit, vegetables and cut flowers now define Punta Cana's cargo profile: the Punta Cana Air Cargo Hub handled more than 33,000 tonnes of import, export and transit freight in 2025, up about 15 percent year on year. Privately run by Grupo Puntacana, the airport (IATA: PUJ, ICAO: MDPC) also set a passenger record of 11,006,110 travellers in 2025, hitting 900 weekly flights in December. The cargo hub is being developed by the Punta Cana Free Trade Zone together with DP World, whose first freighter arrived in 2024 and who expanded the Dominican Republic–Europe freighter service in January 2026. Facilities include roughly 4,000 square metres of cold storage for perishables, direct ramp access for freighters and passenger aircraft, and streamlined transit processes for transshipment consignments. Through an alliance with Venezuela's Solar Cargo, PUJ acts as a distribution point moving South American produce onward to Europe, the United States and Canada. Free-trade-zone status simplifies storage and re-export, with clearance handled by the Dominican customs authority DGA. For conventional general cargo and integrator traffic, Santo Domingo (SDQ), around 190 road kilometres west, remains the larger handler, while La Romana (LRM) is the nearest alternative field. Shippers in perishables and south-to-north supply chains will find Punta Cana a fast-growing base.
