## Description

Fresh fruit, vegetables and cut flowers are reshaping Punta Cana's role in air freight: through an alliance with Venezuela's Solar Cargo, PUJ now moves hundreds of thousands of kilos of perishables from South America onward to Europe. The airport, privately run by Grupo Puntacana, long stood out for tourism, accounting for roughly 60 percent of the country's air arrivals in 2023. Since 2022, the Punta Cana Free Trade Zone has been taking shape in partnership with DP World, backed by some USD 200 million. Its air, sea and land logistics centre spans about 265,000 square metres, with around 75,000 square metres of built infrastructure for imports, exports, transshipment and parcels. Planned cold rooms will handle up to 430 tonnes of air cargo, served by five wide-body freighter stands. For conventional general cargo and integrator traffic, Santo Domingo (SDQ) remains the larger handler for now. As a free-trade zone, however, PUJ is becoming a serious option for perishable and south-to-north supply chains.
