## Description

Pune anchors one of India's densest automotive and engineering clusters — Tata Motors, Bajaj, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen all build in the Chakan–Talegaon belt — and that industry shapes the airport's freight profile. The civil terminal shares Lohagaon air force station with the Indian Air Force, which noticeably constrains available slots. The airport handled roughly 78,700 tonnes of cargo between April 2024 and May 2025, up about twelve percent year on year. International freight only began in June 2024, when the first imports arrived from London Heathrow via a Delhi transshipment, carrying vehicle electronic components and fertiliser-related chemicals. International exports remain small — in the low hundreds of tonnes — while domestic traffic accounts for most of the volume. Bonded warehouses and cold-storage capacity support temperature-sensitive shipments. To move past the spatial limits at Lohagaon, the greenfield Purandar airport is planned as a dedicated replacement for the region.
