## Description

Just under 21 million passengers used Pulkovo Airport (IATA: LED, ICAO: ULLI) in 2024, keeping St. Petersburg's gateway among Europe's 30 busiest even though Western airlines have stayed away since the start of the war against Ukraine. For freight, AO Gruzovoy Terminal Pulkovo operates a 12,000-square-metre facility on 4.7 hectares on the airport's eastern side, the largest air cargo handler in north-west Russia. Its services cover ground handling of all freight flights, terminal processing of inbound and outbound consignments, consolidation and deconsolidation, airmail and in-house customs brokerage, supported by TREPEL loaders rated to 30 tonnes and temperature-controlled storage for pharmaceuticals and perishables. Published expansion plans foresee additional terminal space adding 30,000 to 35,000 tonnes of annual throughput, taking the site toward roughly 100,000 tonnes a year. Located about 23 kilometres south of the city centre, the airport is the home base of the Rossiya airline; since sanctions, its international cargo links have shifted toward Turkey, the Middle East and Asia, with no direct Western European services. In December 2024 Fraport sold its 25 percent stake to Middle Eastern investor Orbit Aviation, ending a 14-year involvement suspended since February 2022. Shippers in the EU, UK, US or Switzerland must check current sanctions and export-control rules before booking, as many commodity groups are prohibited. For intercontinental freighter capacity, the Moscow airports of Sheremetyevo (SVO) and Domodedovo (DME), roughly 650 kilometres south, remain the main options.
