## Description

Just under 21 million passengers used Pulkovo Airport (IATA: LED, ICAO: ULLI) in 2024, keeping St. Petersburg's gateway among Europe's 30 busiest even though Western airlines have stayed away since the start of the war against Ukraine. For freight, Cargo Terminal Pulkovo JSC operates a 12,000 m² facility on 4.7 hectares on the airport's eastern side — the largest cargo handler in north-west Russia and among the country's top five. It is equipped with TREPEL loaders rated to 30 tonnes and temperature-controlled storage, and handles import, export and transit clearance with in-house customs brokerage. Located about 23 km south of the city centre, the airport is the home base of the Rossiya airline; since sanctions, its international cargo links have shifted toward Turkey, the Middle East and Asia. In December 2024 Fraport sold its 25 percent stake to Middle Eastern investor Orbit Aviation, ending a 14-year involvement that had been suspended since February 2022. For intercontinental freighter capacity, the Moscow airports of Sheremetyevo (SVO) and Domodedovo (DME), roughly 650 km south, remain the main hubs.
