When Tibah Airports assumed operations in 2012, MED became the first airport in Saudi Arabia developed under a build-transfer-operate public-private partnership. Today the field is shaped above all by pilgrimage: Medina is Islam's second holiest city, and the airport handled some 13.2 million passengers in 2024, the vast majority travelling for Hajj and Umrah. Cargo plays a secondary part, at roughly 23,000 tonnes a year — under three percent of the kingdom's air freight, well behind Jeddah and Riyadh. A dedicated international cargo terminal handles general and perishable goods, with temperature-controlled storage and customs clearance typically running 24 to 72 hours. Belly capacity on pilgrim and scheduled flights carries pharmaceuticals, perishables and pilgrimage-related exports such as Zamzam water. The Haramain High Speed Railway ties Medina to Jeddah and Mecca, supporting rail-based pre- and on-carriage. For high-volume or time-critical freight, forwarders usually route through King Abdulaziz Airport in Jeddah (JED).
