## Description

Set on Brazil's MATOPIBA agricultural frontier — a belt of soy, grain and cattle straddling Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia — Imperatriz and its Prefeito Renato Moreira Airport (IMP) serve the second-largest city in Maranhão. The airport, opened in 1973 and renamed in 2000 after mayor Renato Cortez Moreira (assassinated in 1993), handles roughly 284,000 passengers, 6,292 flights and about 825 tonnes of air cargo a year. Azul, Gol and LATAM link it to São Luís, Brasília and Belém, with most freight riding as belly cargo aboard these passenger flights. Since 2021 the CCR group (now Motiva) has run the airport under a 30-year concession, investing in upgrades. Its position on the Tocantins river and the BR-010 Belém–Brasília highway anchors multimodal connections. For urgent or high-value shipments, IMP is a dependable regional point, while bulk volumes still move through the north's road and waterway corridors.
