## Description

Microchips from the Silicon Forest, Nike gear and time-critical electronics: much of what leaves Portland by air is high-value, low-weight freight. Portland International Airport (PDX), the largest airport in Oregon, sits on the Columbia River barely a quarter-hour from downtown and handles around 20 million passengers a year. On the cargo side, roughly 20 freight carriers moved about 243.9 million pounds (some 110,000 tonnes) of freight and mail in 2025, with FedEx Express, UPS Airlines and DHL Express anchoring the dedicated PDX Cargo Center and Air Trans Center. The airport forms Site 2 of Foreign-Trade Zone 45, granted to the Port of Portland, with subzones for Lam Research and Epson serving the semiconductor and printing industries. Interstates 5, 84 and 205 feed the apron, BNSF and Union Pacific work the region by rail, and the Port of Portland's Rivergate marine terminals lie just downriver. Mount Hood on the horizon and the slogan "Keep Portland Weird" give the Rose City its unmistakable backdrop.
