## Description

Air Niugini, Papua New Guinea's state-owned carrier, bases its fleet at Port Moresby Jacksons International Airport (IATA: POM, ICAO: AYPY) and moves most of the country's air freight from here. POM is PNG's largest airport, handling roughly 1.6 million passengers in 2025 and concentrating almost all of the nation's international cargo traffic, with a stated handling capacity of around 162,000 tonnes a year. Facilities include a bonded warehouse, a transit zone and animal-quarantine infrastructure; ground and cargo handling is provided by operators including Swissport. Fresh seafood, coffee and vanilla dominate the export side, while consumer, construction and industrial goods come in. Because much of the highland interior has no continuous road link, POM redistributes freight across a dense domestic network of regional airfields – air cargo does the work a truck would do elsewhere. In 2025 the government launched a K4 billion national airport programme with Port Moresby as its top priority: a four-phase redevelopment over about six and a half years, phase one extending the domestic terminal by 110 metres and renewing airfield lighting and power supply. Modern storage and cold-chain facilities are also planned, so produce from Mount Hagen and Lae can be consolidated in Port Moresby for export to Hong Kong, Singapore, Manila and Australia. The Port Moresby seaport is close by, allowing sea and air legs to be combined within one metropolitan area. Domestic alternatives are Lae Nadzab (LAE) and Mount Hagen (HGU); internationally, Brisbane (BNE) and Cairns (CNS) are the nearest cargo gateways.
