## Description

Port Hedland's logistics backbone combines a certified international cargo terminal, an oversize-capable freight apron, refuelling, aviation firefighting and a dedicated heliport — the only such international gateway in Western Australia's Pilbara. The cargo terminal operator manages oversize, time-critical movements for the resources sector and can receive aircraft as large as the Antonov An-124. More than 500,000 passengers a year pass through, chiefly fly-in fly-out crews servicing the surrounding iron-ore operations; scheduled passenger flights are flown by Qantas and Virgin Australia, the latter operating its own cargo facility on site. On the ground, Port Hedland Air Freight (PHAF) adds regional air and road freight, mine-site logistics and refrigerated cargo handling. Bulk iron ore — this is the world's largest bulk-export seaport — leaves by ship, while the airfield concentrates on urgent, high-value consignments. The Great Northern Highway ties the airport to inland mine sites. Co-located flight training and a Royal Flying Doctor Service base round out the operation.
