## Description

Designed for five million passengers and around 20,000 tonnes of freight a year, Platov International Airport (IATA: ROV, ICAO: URRP) near Rostov-on-Don today handles neither. Civil traffic has been suspended since 24 February 2022, and as of August 2026 the airport still accepts no aircraft until further notice. There are no freighter services, no belly cargo and no scheduled handling on site. Opened only in December 2017 as a replacement for the old Rostov city airport (RVI), it carried roughly 2.1 million passengers in 2020 before the shutdown. The cause is the closure of airspace over southern Russia; no reopening date has been announced. Freight for the Rostov region is therefore trucked in from Moscow's cargo airports, chiefly Sheremetyevo (SVO), some 1,100 km away. Further south, Sochi (AER) has stayed open for passenger flights and belly-hold shipments and can absorb smaller consignments. Shippers must also check EU, Swiss, UK and US sanctions and export-control rules, which restrict or prohibit many goods bound for Russia.
