## Description

On paper a modern gateway for five million passengers a year; in practice a silent apron — Platov International Airport (IATA: ROV, ICAO: URRP) near Rostov-on-Don has been closed to civilian traffic since 24 February 2022. It was shut without notice alongside the other airports of southern Russia at the start of the war, and Russia's aviation authority Rosaviatsiya has ruled out any near-term reopening through late 2025. No freighters, no belly cargo and no scheduled handling currently move through Platov. Opened only in December 2017 to replace the old Rostov city airport (RVI), the facility was designed for up to 5 million passengers and around 20,000 tonnes of cargo a year. Today, freight for the Rostov region is trucked in from Moscow's cargo hubs — chiefly Sheremetyevo (SVO), roughly 1,100 km away — while in the south Sochi (AER) has remained open for passenger and belly-hold traffic. For now, routing via Moscow with onward road transport is the only dependable option.
