## Description

Semiconductors, medical devices and other high-value electronics make Penang International (IATA PEN, ICAO WMKP) Malaysia's second-busiest cargo airport by tonnage and its number one by export value, with roughly RM365 billion in exports shipped in 2023. The freight is fed by the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, an electronics cluster on Penang island whose time-critical goods move almost entirely by air. A RM1.5 billion expansion tendered in 2024 is around 40% complete, upgrading aprons, taxiways and freight facilities. From early 2026 the PILA project (Penang International Logistics and Aerospace) adds capacity — about 100,000 tonnes a year in its first phase, scaling toward 500,000 tonnes annually in the long term. The airport sits in the south of the island, linked to the mainland by the Penang Bridge; the Kuala Lumpur mega-hub (KUL) lies about 350 km south. For exporters of chips, devices and other high-value freight, PEN is northern Malaysia's principal air cargo gateway.
