## Description

Spanning roughly 3,600 hectares and sitting about 40 km from Tehran, the Payam Special Economic Zone in Alborz Province is built around a runway designed for freight rather than passengers. Payam (PYK), established in 1990 and opened in 1997, is operated by Payam Aviation Services Co. and has served primarily as a cargo field. The zone bundles a logistics city and export terminal with ICT, high-tech, knowledge-based and pharmaceutical industries plus an aviation training centre. For forwarders, the draw is the zone's customs regime and bonded storage, which allow goods to be warehoused, processed and re-exported under deferred duties. Passenger flights began in 2018 but are currently dormant, leaving cargo as the dominant activity. Good road links to Tehran and Iran's main corridors round out its airfreight role. In practice, Payam functions as a freight node for the Karaj/Tehran area alongside the much larger Tehran Imam Khomeini (IKA).
