## Description

Air France, Brussels Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Royal Air Maroc and ASKY anchor the freight side of Ouagadougou's Thomas Sankara International (OUA/DFFD), moving most cargo in the belly holds of their passenger fleets. The airport handles roughly 98 percent of Burkina Faso's scheduled commercial traffic and clears close to 10,000 tonnes of air freight a year, up from about 7,448 tonnes in 2009. Because the country is landlocked, customs clearance runs through a roughly 2,350 m² bonded warehouse operated directly by Burkinabè customs, with onward sea freight trucked to the ports of Abidjan, Lomé, Tema and Cotonou. The Sitarail railway toward Abidjan and the main trunk roads tie the capital into regional supply chains. A new greenfield airport at Ouagadougou-Donsin, some 35 kilometres to the north-east and under construction since 2021, is nearing completion in 2025/26 and is designed for larger aircraft, set to take over from the cramped city site.
