## Description

Sylhet no longer has to send its exports to Dhaka first: with a dedicated freight terminal, Osmany International (ZYL/VGSY) has become Bangladesh's second airport, after Hazrat Shahjalal, to host freighter operations. Completed in 2022, the cargo terminal offers around 100 tonnes of capacity and an Explosive Detection System (EDS) tuned to the strict standards of the UK and European markets. Operations opened with a chartered Airbus A330-300 freighter lifting up to 60 tonnes of garments to Spain, with further direct cargo services to Europe following. The traffic reflects the region's deep ties to the Bangladeshi diaspora in Britain, which also sustains international passenger routes to London and the Middle East. Customs clearance and bonded warehousing are handled on site by Bangladesh Customs. A new terminal complex including a dedicated cargo building, built by Beijing Urban Construction Group for around US$170 million, is due for completion by the end of 2027 and will further expand capacity. Landside, ZYL links by trunk road to Sylhet's tea estates and natural-gas fields. For forwarders, the airport relieves Dhaka's overcrowded Cargo Village and shortens the chain for north-eastern textile exporters.
