## Description

Built in 1980 as a cargo alternative to Belgrade, Osijek Airport (IATA: OSI, ICAO: LDOS) is the only airport in Croatia where freight, not passengers, is the core strategic role. Sitting near Klisa in eastern Slavonia about 20 km from Osijek, close to the Serbian and Hungarian borders, it offers round-the-clock handling with in-house ground services, customs representation and veterinary and sanitary inspection. Its roughly 2,499-metre runway and apron accept wide-body freighters up to the Boeing 747 and Airbus A330, and it has long flown ad-hoc charters – frequently Ilyushin Il-76s – carrying perishable foodstuffs, electronics and humanitarian or high-value goods between the EU and Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Scheduled passenger service is small and seasonal, with terminal capacity of roughly 100,000 to 150,000 travellers a year. A €14.3 million terminal modernisation launched in 2025, expanding the building to about 2,800 m² and due for completion in spring 2026, aims to add new routes for the 2026 summer season and revive the cargo business. For forwarders, Osijek is a genuine regional cargo point for charter and special operations, while Zagreb (ZAG) remains Croatia's main freight gateway.
