## Description

Two airports, one clear division of labour: Kansai International (KIX) takes Osaka's international traffic and its freighters, while Itami (IATA: ITM, ICAO: RJOO) has been a purely domestic field since 1994 and handled roughly 90,000 tonnes of cargo in 2024. Almost all of that moves as belly freight on the dense ANA and JAL networks to Tokyo, Sapporo, Fukuoka and Okinawa; monthly volume reached close to 7,000 tonnes in May 2025, about five percent above the year before. No all-cargo aircraft serve Itami, and there is no customs clearance for international consignments — Kansai's import and export freight runs through KIX, which also hosts FedEx's North Pacific hub. Perishables, electronics and e-commerce parcels for the Japanese home market make up the bulk of what is loaded here. The airport's advantage is its position inside the Osaka–Kobe–Kyoto conurbation, directly on the Chugoku and Hanshin expressways, which gives time-critical domestic shipments a head start over KIX some 40 kilometres away on its artificial island in Osaka Bay. Itami is operated by Kansai Airports, the same company that runs KIX and Kobe. A strict night curfew from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. applies because of the surrounding residential districts, so overnight freighter rotations are not an option. Shippers sending internationally from the Kansai region therefore book via KIX and use Itami, if at all, for the domestic leg.
