## Description

The name says 'Osaka International Airport', but the code ITM has pointed to a purely domestic operation since 1994, when all international services moved to the newly built Kansai International Airport (KIX). For logistics professionals Itami still matters: roughly 140,000 tonnes of domestic freight per year travel as belly cargo on the dense ANA and JAL networks to Tokyo, Sapporo, Fukuoka and Okinawa. There is no customs clearance for international shipments — Kansai's import and export freight runs through KIX, which also hosts FedEx's North Pacific hub. Itami's advantage is its position inside the Osaka–Kobe–Kyoto conurbation, directly on the Chugoku and Hanshin expressways, giving time-critical domestic consignments a head start over KIX, some 40 kilometres away on its artificial island in Osaka Bay. The airport is run by Kansai Airports, the same operator as KIX and Kobe. A strict night curfew applies from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. due to the surrounding residential areas.
