## Description

Opened in 1980, Nuku Hiva's airfield replaced an older, unsafe landing strip and gave the Marquesas a dependable air link for the first time; a planned second phase that would have stretched the runway to 2,650 metres was never built. Today Air Tahiti and Air Moana connect the island to Papeete with ATR turboprops, the workhorses of inter-island travel, operating only in daylight because the single runway has no lighting. The airport carries passengers, mail and light belly freight rather than dedicated cargo, so commercial shipments to the Marquesas move mainly by the supply vessel Aranui and by sea, while international air cargo is cleared through Tahiti Faaʻa (PPT). For freight planners this is a feeder point, not a standalone cargo station. cargo_capable=false.
