## Description

The airport takes its second name from Moufdi Zakaria, the poet who penned Algeria's national anthem and was born in the nearby M'zab. Serving Ghardaïa from El Atteuf, GHA is the air access point for the five fortified oasis towns of the M'zab valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for the gas fields around Hassi R'Mel to the north. Air Algérie and Tassili Airlines mainly operate links to Algiers and other Saharan towns, with a notable share of charters for the oil and gas sector. There is no dedicated cargo terminal; air freight is limited to belly loads, while larger consignments move through Algiers Houari Boumediene (ALG) some 600 kilometres north. At roughly 460 metres of elevation, GHA remains first and foremost a passenger and supply airport for the Algerian south.
