## Description

Opened in October 2024 with a USD 230 million Chinese grant, New Gwadar International Airport (GWD) was built well ahead of the traffic it will eventually need. Sitting northeast of the deep-sea port of Gwadar in Balochistan, it is a flagship project of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), with a 3,658-metre runway able to handle the largest freighters in service, up to the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8. Plans size the field for around 30,000 tonnes of cargo, backed by a dedicated air-cargo building and refrigerated storage aimed at exporting the region's seafood. Its real purpose is the link to Gwadar port — a planned sea-to-air corridor that would transfer freight between ships and aircraft. For now operations are light — commercial service began on 20 January 2025 with about five weekly flights linking Gwadar to Karachi and to Muscat in Oman — while customs and a port free-zone framework are being put in place. Forwarders should read GWD as infrastructure prepared for future growth rather than an established cargo node.
