## Description

Commercial aviation at Dum Dum dates back to the 1920s, making Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) one of Asia's oldest airfield sites. Today the Kolkata airport is the principal air cargo point for eastern and north-eastern India. In fiscal 2024/25 it handled around 165,600 tonnes of freight, an all-time high and an increase of just over 9 percent year on year, with international cargo accounting for a substantial share. The Air Cargo Complex, run by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), also processes transshipment traffic towards South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Central Asia. A new cargo facility was structurally completed in early 2024, with trial operations starting in March 2025. Road links across the metropolitan region connect the airport to trade flows towards Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan, and the seaport of Kolkata (Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port) lies only a few kilometres away. For forwarders serving India's east, CCU is the established reference point.
