## Description

Landlocked and heavily import-dependent, Chad relies on N'Djamena International Airport (NDJ) for the goods that cannot wait for the long road haul from the coast. The country's main airport links the capital to Ethiopian Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, EgyptAir, Royal Air Maroc, Kenya Airways, ASKY and Air France, most of which carry freight as belly load. The UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) is a major presence, flying relief supplies into the Sahel and toward Sudanese refugee camps. Cargo passes through five storage buildings totalling roughly 1,650 tonnes of capacity – four for imports, one for exports – with customs inspection carried out before loading and unloading. Annual air freight ran between 4,200 and 6,400 tonnes in the 2010s, modest but vital for an import-driven economy. Heavy and bulky goods instead travel overland via the road corridor from the Cameroonian port of Douala. An ongoing upgrade aims to lift capacity to around 20,000 tonnes of freight and 800,000 passengers a year by mid-2026. For forwarders, NDJ handles the urgent and the humanitarian, while trucks carry the bulk.
