## Description

1.95 million tonnes of international cargo in 2024 and more than 30,000 international freighter movements keep Narita (IATA: NRT) firmly ahead as Japan's largest air freight location. Nippon Cargo Airlines is headquartered here, ANA Cargo and JAL Cargo run major operations, FedEx has expanded its Eastern Japan gateway, and UPS plus a long list of international carriers serve the field. In May 2025 Emirates SkyCargo added the airport's first scheduled freighter link to the Middle East, and through 2026 JAL deepened its cargo codeshares with Cargolux (Narita–Luxembourg) and Kalitta Air (Narita–Chicago, raised to six weekly flights from April). Typical traffic includes pharmaceuticals, semiconductor equipment and fresh tuna in temperature-managed containers. Tokyo Customs operates a branch on site, with extensive bonded warehouse capacity inside the cargo area. A planned third runway in 2029 will lift annual slots from 340,000 to 500,000, and a highly automated 'New Cargo Area' beside the expressway is designed to push capacity toward 3 million tonnes. The Higashi-Kanto Expressway puts greater Tokyo about an hour away by truck, and the container terminals of Tokyo Bay remain within reach for sea-air routings.
