## Description

Munich Airport (IATA: MUC, ICAO: EDDM) opened in 1992 on the Erdinger Moos marshland, about 28 kilometres northeast of the city, and has grown into Germany's second-busiest passenger airport with around 40 million travellers a year. Cargo follows the passenger network: as Lufthansa's second hub after Frankfurt, MUC offers a dense long-haul schedule, and most of its tonnage — about 311,000 tonnes in 2024 (up 9.5 percent) and already around 341,000 tonnes in 2025, rank four among German cargo airports — travels as belly freight in widebody holds. Dedicated freighters supplement the schedule on selected routes to Asia and the Gulf. Cargogate, the airport's own handling subsidiary, runs the freight terminals, with pharma and cool-chain capacity serving Bavaria's export industries; machinery, automotive and semiconductor suppliers dominate the shipment mix. The ownership of Terminal 2 is a European rarity: the airport company and Lufthansa run it jointly. Forwarders access the site via the A92 motorway; there is no rail freight link, so all pre- and on-carriage moves by road, with a busy RFS corridor connecting Munich to Frankfurt. A footnote travellers remember: the campus brews its own beer at Airbräu, billed as Europe's only airport brewery.
