## Description

Munich Airport (IATA: MUC, ICAO: EDDM) opened in 1992 on the Erdinger Moos marshland and has since grown into Germany's fourth-largest cargo airport, handling about 341,000 tonnes of air freight in 2025 after 311,091 tonnes in 2024. Almost all of that tonnage travels as belly cargo: as Lufthansa's second hub after Frankfurt, MUC offers a dense long-haul schedule to Asia, North America and the Gulf, supplemented by selective freighter services. Cargogate, the airport's own handling subsidiary, runs roughly 17,000 square metres of freight warehouse covering acceptance, consolidation, customs clearance and dangerous goods, with Swissport operating as a second handler since 2010. Temperature-controlled areas serve pharmaceuticals and perishables for Bavaria's export industries, where machinery, automotive and semiconductor suppliers dominate the shipment mix. Construction started in April 2026 on an additional cargo staging area of around 15,000 square metres in the southern freight zone, due for completion by the end of 2026, with further terminal space in planning. Terminal 2 is jointly owned by the airport company and Lufthansa, an arrangement rarely seen in Europe. Forwarders reach the site 28 kilometres northeast of the city via the A92 motorway; there is no rail freight connection, so all pre- and on-carriage moves by road, with a busy road feeder corridor to Frankfurt. Shippers with full freighter loads or outsized consignments generally route via Frankfurt (FRA) or Leipzig/Halle (LEJ).
