## Description

In 1943, US forces seized the Japanese airstrip at Munda Point in one of the Pacific War's fiercest battles; today Munda Airport (MUA) on New Georgia carries civil traffic for the Solomon Islands' Western Province. A USD 23.6 million reconstruction co-funded by New Zealand, the World Bank and the Solomon Islands Government lengthened and strengthened the runway and added a new control tower and an international terminal completed in 2023. The airport now serves as an international alternate to Honiara, trimming the fuel load that long-haul services must carry into the province, and Solomon Airlines reopened a direct Brisbane link in early 2026 alongside domestic hops to Honiara and Gizo. Cargo here is modest: a small freight building handles belly consignments and domestic goods rather than dedicated freighter loads. For substantial airfreight into the Solomon Islands, shippers route through Honiara's Henderson International (HIR).
