## Description

Mtwara Airport (MYW) is less a cargo gateway than a bet on one. Located in Tanzania's far south near the Mozambique border, it currently handles mostly domestic passenger services such as Air Tanzania flights to Dar es Salaam, and its 2,259-metre asphalt runway is still too short for dedicated freighters. The airport offers no genuine air-cargo capacity today; heavy or time-critical shipments route through Julius Nyerere International (DAR) in Dar es Salaam, the nearest customs-equipped cargo hub. That picture is set to change as the Lindi–Mtwara offshore gas basin and the planned Tanzania LNG project drive demand for project freight, specialised equipment and crew movements. The adjacent deep-water port of Mtwara already adds sea-freight capacity for bulk and breakbulk.
