## Description

On the Tagus estuary opposite Lisbon, Montijo Air Base sits at the centre of Portugal's long airport debate: in 2024 the government chose Alcochete for the capital's new airport (targeted for around 2035) and recast Montijo as a complementary, transitional site rather than the main solution. For now it stays primarily military – a Força Aérea Portuguesa base whose units include the C-130 Hercules transport squadron. There is no commercial civil or cargo operation at present.
