About 15 kilometres south of Bamako, Modibo Keita International Airport (IATA: BKO) is the principal international gateway of landlocked Mali, operated by Aéroports du Mali (ADM). High-value gold, mined in one of Africa's leading producing countries, is the flagship airfreight commodity, shipped under tight security in small volumes. Passenger and belly-cargo services are provided by Ethiopian Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, EgyptAir, ASKY, Air Côte d'Ivoire and Air Sénégal, plugging Bamako into the freighter networks at Addis Ababa, Istanbul and Casablanca. Seasonal mango exports, peaking from April to June, add perishable volume that moves partly by air and partly chilled overland to the coast. Customs is administered by Mali's Direction Générale des Douanes; the country belongs to the WAEMU monetary union and uses the CFA franc. Because Mali has no coastline, bulky goods such as cotton and fuel rely on road corridors to the seaports of Dakar, Abidjan, Lomé and Tema rather than on aircraft. Annual tonnage is modest beside the region's coastal hubs, yet the gold component makes the airport's trade disproportionately valuable. Recent terminal upgrades have widened capacity for both passengers and cargo.
