## Description

In June 2025 Turkish Cargo returned to Mitiga (MJI) with dedicated freighters from Istanbul after a ten-year absence – a telling signal for an airport that since 2018 has been Tripoli's only working international field. Set on the site of a former military base east of the city, Mitiga took over after the old Tripoli International was wrecked in the civil war, and now concentrates almost all of the capital's scheduled traffic. Carriers include Libyan Wings, Libyan Airlines, Buraq Air and Afriqiyah Airways alongside foreign lines such as Turkish Airlines, EgyptAir, Air Cairo, Royal Jordanian and Royal Air Maroc. Cargo activity centres on essential inbound flows – humanitarian aid, perishables and industrial goods – handled on both scheduled and charter freight services with on-site customs clearance. Local forwarders such as Janah Cargo arrange consolidation and clearance at the airport. Surface links run mainly along the coastal road into Tripoli and onward inland, as Libya has virtually no railway network. The security situation remains volatile, and operations are periodically suspended when fighting flares. For forwarders, MJI is the principal but disruption-prone access point to western Libya, backed up by Misrata further east.
