## Description

Known as Kozlov until 1932, when it was renamed for the plant breeder Ivan Michurin, the city lends its name to a military airfield about 9 km to its northwest in Tambov Oblast. Michurinsk air base hosts the 644th Training Aviation Regiment flying Aero L-39 Albatros jets and carries no IATA or ICAO code. There is no civil airline service, no air cargo and no freight terminal. Michurinsk is a Russian centre of agricultural and horticultural science, and its produce and seed stock travel by rail and road rather than by air. Forwarders with shipments for the region rely on the Moscow hubs, chiefly Sheremetyevo (SVO), some 400 km to the northwest.
