## Description

Four a.m. on the cargo apron in west Miami: refrigerated trailers line up as flower pallets from Bogotá roll out of widebody freighters. Miami International Airport (IATA: MIA, ICAO: KMIA) handled close to 3.5 million tons of freight in 2025, up 13.6 percent and a sixth consecutive year of growth – making it the busiest cargo airport in the United States. Roughly 80 percent of all air freight between the United States and Latin America passes through MIA. About nine of every ten cut flowers imported into the US land here, alongside seafood from Chile and Ecuador and a fast-growing pharma segment: IATA designated MIA the first Pharma Hub Airport in the US back in 2015, and eleven members of the airport's cargo community hold CEIV certification. On-airport USDA and CBP inspection plus Foreign Trade Zone No. 281 keep perishable clearance down to a few hours. On the passenger side, the American Airlines hub counted around 55.3 million travelers in 2025, feeding a dense belly network across the Caribbean and South America. Road access runs via the Dolphin (SR 836) and Palmetto (SR 826) expressways to I-95, and PortMiami sits barely seven miles east, making sea-air transfers routine; Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and Orlando (MCO) serve as freighter alternatives.
