## Description

At two in the morning the MEM ramp is among the busiest places in American aviation: the FedEx World Hub night sort moves hundreds of thousands of packages while most of the country sleeps. Memphis International Airport (IATA: MEM, ICAO: KMEM) handled about 3.7 million metric tonnes of cargo in 2024 – down roughly three percent year on year, yet still among the world's largest freight airports behind Hong Kong and Shanghai, and the number one in North America. FedEx alone accounts for more than 95 percent of the tonnage, running up to 400 flights a day, employing over 11,000 people across more than 34 million square feet, and operating a fully automated 1.3-million-square-foot sort building, opened October 2024, that adds capacity for some 56,000 packages per hour. Passenger traffic is modest at around five million a year on Delta, American and Southwest; the airport has been cargo-first since Delta closed its passenger operation in 2013. Forwarders value the ground side: Interstates 40 and 55, five Class I railroads including BNSF, UP, CN and NS, and one of the largest inland river ports on the Mississippi. Customs clearance runs around the clock through CBP, and Foreign Trade Zone 77 covers the airport. Memphis brands itself "America's Aerotropolis" – for express freight in and out of North America, it is the default answer.
