## Description

Once Iran's principal international gateway, Mehrabad International Airport (IATA: THR, ICAO: OIII) in western Tehran handed its international scheduled and freighter traffic to Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA) in 2007, including its former Terminal 5 cargo operations. It nonetheless remains the country's busiest airport, with more than 13.7 million passengers in the Iranian year to March 2025 across roughly 60 domestic destinations served by about 23 airlines — and it still led all Iranian airports on freight, handling some 19,700 tonnes in the first half of 2025. For air freight this creates a clear division of labour: international shipments clear and route through IKA, while Mehrabad handles domestic cargo and belly freight on internal flights; no dedicated freighter operation is confirmed at THR. Customs clearance for international goods is therefore centralised at IKA under the Iranian Customs Administration (IRICA). Typical loads are time-critical goods such as fresh produce and industrial parts moving between Tehran and the provinces. Its city-edge location gives THR excellent motorway and metro access, keeping first- and last-mile runs short. Shippers moving goods into or out of Iran internationally should plan via IKA, with Shiraz (SYZ) or Isfahan (IFN) as southern alternatives. International sanctions remain a decisive constraint on carrier choice, insurance and payment routes for any Iran traffic.
