## Description

Once Iran's principal international gateway, Mehrabad International Airport (THR) in western Tehran handed its international scheduled and freighter traffic to the new Imam Khomeini airport (IKA) in 2007, including its former Terminal 5 cargo operations. Today it is the country's busiest airport by aircraft movements and passenger numbers, but overwhelmingly for domestic services. For air freight this creates a clear division of labour: international shipments clear and route through IKA, while Mehrabad handles domestic cargo and belly freight on internal flights. Customs clearance for international goods is therefore centralised at IKA under the Iranian Customs Administration (IRICA). Its city-edge location gives THR excellent motorway and metro access to central Tehran, keeping first- and last-mile runs short for domestic consignments. For forwarders, Mehrabad functions mainly as a national distribution and feeder point. International import and export volumes remain anchored at IKA. With six terminals, THR is Iran's densest domestic hub.
