## Description

Few Afghan airports illustrate the rail-and-air interface as clearly as Mazar-i-Sharif. The line from Hairatan on the Uzbek border, operational since 2011, terminates close to the apron, letting freight move between trains, trucks and aircraft on the edge of Central Asia. Serving the main city of Balkh province, MZR is one of the country's four international gateways and sits within reach of the Uzbek, Tajik and Turkmen frontiers. A dedicated air corridor opened in 2017 carried Afghan dried fruit, carpets and other goods to India, while inbound cargo is released through a facility run by the Afghan Customs Department. Passenger links, mainly Kam Air services to Kabul, are modest. Capacity for temperature-controlled pharmaceuticals or dangerous goods is limited, so specialised consignments are frequently routed via Hamid Karzai International in Kabul.
