## Description

A 3,318-metre runway on a volcanic island in mid-Pacific: Mataveri (IPC) ranks as the world's most remote airport, some 3,500 kilometres from the Chilean mainland. The strip was lengthened in the 1980s with NASA involvement and designated an emergency landing site for the Space Shuttle programme. Today only LATAM flies the Boeing 787 from Santiago (SCL) to Rapa Nui; the belly capacity of those services, together with sea freight, forms the island's supply line. There is no dedicated cargo terminal or freighter operation, so volumes stay small and closely tied to tourism. For planned air freight, Santiago (SCL) is the starting point from which every Rapa Nui shipment is routed.
