## Description

Coral-stone palaces and a working harbour give Massawa its character; its airport, by contrast, barely registers. Lying near the Red Sea port about 60 kilometres east of Asmara, the field handles only light regional and official traffic. It has no freight capacity worth the name — Eritrea's maritime trade flows through Massawa's docks, not its runway. Air consignments for the area go via Asmara (ASM) and onward through Gulf hubs.
