## Description

More than 1.5 million passengers a year pass through Salta (SLA/SASA) after recent terminal and runway upgrades, making it the principal gateway of north-western Argentina. Named after independence hero Martín Miguel de Güemes and set near the Andes at around 1,200 metres, the airport links year-round to Buenos Aires (EZE and AEP), Córdoba, Mendoza, Puerto Iguazú and Rosario with Aerolíneas Argentinas. Its freight base is regional agriculture: tobacco, beans and fresh produce ship out from here, and food cargo has at times moved on Boeing 767 freighters to the United States. As an international field, Salta offers customs (Aduana) and phytosanitary inspection, both essential for farm exports. Most goods nonetheless travel in the holds of passenger flights and are consolidated at Buenos Aires for intercontinental legs. National Routes 9 and 51 connect the airport toward Chile and the Andean highlands. For forwarders, Salta is the main collection point for perishable and agricultural exports from the north-west.
