## Description

Road, rail, sea and air converge unusually tightly at Maputo: the seaport lies next door, the N4 Maputo Corridor reaches Johannesburg and the Gauteng industrial belt in a few hours by truck, and Maputo Airport (MPM/FQMA) adds the air leg with 24-hour operations. The airport has two passenger terminals, domestic and international, plus a separate cargo terminal. Menzies Aviation has handled ground operations here since 2019 and opened a newly built, technically upgraded cargo facility on 5 September 2024, materially lifting Mozambique's freight handling capacity. The facility offers temperature-controlled warehousing and works closely with Mozambican customs to streamline clearance, which matters for perishables and pharmaceuticals. Airlink and Qatar Airways are among the carriers served, and in August 2025 freight operator Astral launched a Guangzhou–Nairobi–Maputo service, giving southern Africa a direct link to south Chinese manufacturing. MPM handled 1,051,868 passengers in 2023, a 22 per cent increase, while Mozambique's airports together reached about 2.4 million passengers in 2024. A national civil aviation strategy published in 2025 foresees around US$710 million of investment over 20 years, with modernisation at Maputo, Beira and Nacala already under way since October 2024. For broader intercontinental freighter capacity, Johannesburg O. R. Tambo (JNB) is the practical alternative, while Beira (BEW) and Nacala (MNC) serve central and northern Mozambique.
