## Description

Much of the China–Myanmar trade still crosses overland at the Muse–Ruili border rather than by air, yet Mandalay International Airport (IATA: MDL) is steadily building its cargo role for central and upper Myanmar. Located near Tada-U, about 35 kilometres south of Mandalay, it is the country's second international airport, with a 4,267-metre runway — the longest in active use in Southeast Asia — and capacity for up to three million passengers a year. Cargo warehousing is run by MK Hercules (MMH), a joint venture between Japan's MK Co of Hiroshima and Myanmar's Hercules Logistics; the warehouse operates daily 08:00–18:00 and customs Monday to Friday 10:00–17:00. Its proximity to China shapes the traffic: China Southern, Air China, China Eastern and Ruili Airlines serve the field, alongside Myanmar Airways International and Myanmar National Airlines. Exports center on agricultural and consumer goods from the central plains, while Chinese imports and e-commerce parcels are rising. Authorities expect MDL to become the leading freight facility of the interior. Political instability since 2021, however, continues to constrain international links.
