## Description

Around 120,000 tonnes of freight a year pass through the World Freight Terminal at Manchester Airport (IATA: MAN, ICAO: EGCC), the UK's fourth-largest cargo airport behind Heathrow, East Midlands and Stansted. The tonnage rides almost entirely in widebody bellies: Emirates, Qatar Airways, Hainan Airlines and Virgin Atlantic link northern England nonstop with the Gulf, Asia and North America. For exporters across the industrial North, that saves a 300-kilometre truck run to Heathrow. With more than 30 million passengers and two full-length parallel runways — the only UK airport outside Heathrow with that capacity — Manchester anchors the northern air network. Owner Manchester Airports Group (MAG) also runs Stansted and East Midlands; its majority shareholders are Manchester City Council and nine neighbouring boroughs, a rarity among major European airports. The freight estate itself was acquired by investor Columbia Threadneedle, which is roughly doubling its warehouse space: a first phase of three new units totalling about 9,290 square metres completed in 2024, with further halls planned. Freight access runs via the M56, 14 kilometres south of the city centre, and the airport's own station combines mainline rail and Metrolink trams under one roof.
