## Description

Until 2014 the United States ran a sprawling Transit Center at Bishkek's Manas airport, funnelling troops and supplies into Afghanistan; when the base closed, its hardstands and fuel infrastructure passed to civilian use. The field was renamed under the IATA code BSZ in August 2025 (the old FRU echoed the city's Soviet name, Frunze) and remains Kyrgyzstan's principal gateway for passengers and freight, some 23 km northwest of the capital. Cargo moves through a dedicated terminal on the apron offering 3,360 m² of bonded and non-bonded storage, with the first two days of warehousing free of charge. Perishables, general freight and outsized consignments are handled, with temperature-controlled facilities and customs clearance on site. Turkish Cargo put Manas on the freight map as a technical stop on its Hong Kong–Istanbul rotations. Volumes climbed 18.5% in early 2025, and Airports of Kyrgyzstan, Kyrgyz Pochtasy and the customs authority have agreed to build a multimodal logistics and e-commerce complex with warehouses, customs terminals and fulfilment zones. For forwarders the draw is geography: Central Asia is absorbing freight rerouted between Europe and Asia, and Bishkek sits squarely on that corridor.
