## Description

Pharmaceuticals, medical devices, electronics and aircraft spare parts from Malta's maintenance sector make up much of the freight moving through Malta International Airport (MLA/LMML), the islands' only international airport, at Luqa about 8 km south of Valletta. It handled roughly 23,624 tonnes of cargo in 2024, up more than 14% on the year before. Freight is processed through the former Luqa passenger terminal, which now serves as the airport's cargo terminal with warehousing and handling space. Most of that tonnage travels as belly cargo on scheduled flights to continental Europe; regular full-freighter services are not consistently documented at MLA and play a secondary role. Malta is inside the EU customs and VAT territory, so intra-EU consignments need no import clearance, while third-country goods pass Maltese customs. For volume and heavy cargo the Malta Freeport at Marsaxlokk — one of the Mediterranean's largest transhipment ports, around 10 km from the airport — is the usual route, which keeps sea-air combinations short. Shippers needing freighter capacity or wider network reach typically route via Catania (CTA) in Sicily or Rome Fiumicino (FCO).
