## Description

Salt, leather and cloth once crossed the Sahara by camel to reach Kano, for centuries the southern terminus of the trans-Saharan caravan trade; today such goods arrive by air. Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport is the principal cargo airport of northern Nigeria, with ground handlers NAHCO and SAHCO processing freight and a cargo building that includes a cold room and storage for dangerous goods, fragile items and perishables. In 2025 the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria commissioned a new domestic cargo facility, while an expanded cargo terminal stands near completion. Clearance runs under the Nigeria Customs Service, and the adjacent free trade zone gives Kano a special customs status for imports and re-exports. Roads run north to the markets of Niger and Chad, and the standard-gauge Kano–Maradi railway now under construction is set to tie the airport more closely to its inland catchment. The airport is also a major hub for pilgrim flights during the Hajj. For forwarders, KAN is the natural air-cargo consolidation point for Nigeria's Muslim north.
