## Description

In the first half of 2025, Malé International Airport — officially Velana International (MLE) — moved roughly 34,500 tonnes of cargo: about 25,000 tonnes of imports, some 2,400 tonnes of exports (up 6 percent) and close to 6,900 tonnes of transshipment (up 12 percent). The field sits on its own island, Hulhulé, beside the capital Malé, to which it is linked by a bridge. Since 15 January 2024 freight has run through a new 12,000-square-metre terminal rated at 120,000 tonnes a year, with plans to reach 300,000 tonnes. It is run by the state-owned Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). Imports are driven by tourism, supplying resorts with fresh food and equipment, while exports are led by chilled fresh tuna flown to Europe and Asia. Cargo carriers include Qatar Cargo alongside regional operators such as Afcom Cargo, Fly Vaayu and MJets. As the Maldives form a separate customs territory, national customs clear import, export and re-export inside the new terminal, which is also meant to seed a re-export trade. For forwarders, MLE is the country's only intercontinental freight gateway; onward distribution then continues by boat or seaplane.
