## Description

Built for the Euro 2012 football championship, Lviv's terminal was designed for crowds – since 24 February 2022 it has stood empty. Lviv International Airport «Danylo Halytskyi» (IATA: LWO, ICAO: UKLL), some 6 kilometres west of the city centre, has been closed along with all Ukrainian airspace, yet it is completely undamaged and, by its own account, could resume flights within two to four weeks of an official reopening decision. That makes it the front-runner in the phased reopening a government working group has been preparing since March 2026: no major Ukrainian airport lies further from the front line, the Polish border is only about 70 kilometres away, and an approach corridor directly from Poland or Slovakia would avoid sensitive airspace. Latvia's airBaltic was the first foreign carrier to announce its readiness to return. Before the war the airport handled around 2.2 million passengers a year. For cargo, the nationwide rule applies until reopening: air freight for western Ukraine lands at Rzeszów or Warsaw and crosses the border by truck, with EU customs clearance at the point of entry. For Lviv's growing IT and manufacturing sector, LWO would be the natural re-entry into air logistics. The airport is named after Danylo of Halych, the medieval king who founded the city.
