## Description

A 270 million-dollar, 14,000-square-metre terminal opened at Lungi in March 2023, built by Turkey's Summa on a build-operate-transfer deal and able to handle eight widebodies at once; its solar farm makes it West Africa's first fully green airport terminal. Lungi is Sierra Leone's only international airport, served by Brussels Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, ASKY, Kenya Airways and Air Peace. A dedicated cargo terminal was built alongside the passenger building and is run by private handler Sky Handling Partner (SHP), covering freight processing, ramp and handling services. Air-cargo volumes stay modest: high-value and time-critical goods move as belly freight, while the country's bulk exports — rutile (titanium ore), bauxite, diamonds, cocoa and fish — go mainly by sea through the port of Freetown. One logistical quirk shapes every shipment: the airport sits across the estuary from the capital, so people and goods cross by ferry, water taxi or speedboat — about an hour over the water. Customs clearance is handled on site by Sierra Leone's revenue authority. For forwarders, Lungi is the country's main air entry, but the water crossing to Freetown belongs in every transit plan.
